Clinical Significance:
HLA-B*5701 has been shown in clinical studies to be associated with Abacavir hypersensitivity reaction (HSR) in HIV patients.1,2 In Abacavir-naïve patients, HLA-B*5701 genotyping may be useful for risk stratification.3
Specimen Requirements:
Preferred sample: 10 mL room temperature whole blood collected in yellow-top (ACD A or ACD B) tubes (5 mL minimum).
Alternate sample: Whole blood in EDTA lavender-top tubes is also acceptable.

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) followed by hybridization with sequence specific oligonucleotide probes.
